Officials tout economic impact as Boyd County casino celebrates one-year-anniversary

Sandy’s Racing and Gaming in Ashland is marking one year of operation since opening to the public in October 2023. Officials said the celebration will feature live music and local craft vendors.

Andrew Steele, Executive Director of Boyd County Tourism, said Sandy’s has brought new visitors and entertainment opportunities to the county.

“People that are typically doing motorcoach tours are a little older, and casinos – slot machines and motor coach tours go hand in hand. So, we’ve been able to use it to extend some itineraries. But you know, it’s just a big asset that we’ve been able to use to sell, to bring in other things,” said Steele.

The casino has grown its footprint since successfully launching last year. Sandy’s broke ground on a $10 million horse track earlier this year that is expected to be completed by 2026. Once finished, it will be the only racetrack in the state dedicated solely to quarter horse racing.

The Camp Landing Entertainment District, where the casino is located, is also expanding. Officials said there are plans to build a 146,000-square-foot sports complex.

Steele said the casino and Camp Landing have made the region more attractive to investors.

“When you’ve got Sandy’s there and they’re bringing people there and Malibu Jacks and various restaurants, the more people that we can get there, the higher traffic counts, and the easier it is to sell our community to potential investors,” said Steele.

Sandy’s will host their anniversary event on Saturday, October 26. More information regarding the event can be found on Sandy’s Racing & Gaming’s Facebook.
