Security firm Protective Force International (PFI) reportedly now has 18 Vegas gaming properties among its clients to keep these casinos safe and secure.

Las Vegas-based PFI either supplements existing casino security forces or provides most of the security for the properties which typically are found on the Las Vegas Strip or on off-Strip locations.

The smaller casinos can’t always afford having a fully-staffed security department. Or some gaming properties may need a higher level of security during busy weekends or when special events are taking place.

The security firm works collaboratively with local police and other law enforcement agencies.

Lots of Training

PFI’s specially trained security guards often are armed and regularly go through target practice at shooting ranges.

Many have served in the military, such as the Army, Air Force or Marines, or have been police officers. Continuing training is important.

“Just because you are a veteran or [have] prior law enforcement [experience] doesn’t necessarily qualify you for just having a firearm and being on our team patrolling and augmenting casinos,” Jonathan Alvarez, CEO of PFI, recently told Las Vegas TV station KVVU.

We want to make sure we have the right team in place [so] when an emergency happens, they can act accordingly and be at the right place at the right time.”

Next month’s activities and events in Las Vegas will keep the security firm especially busy.

Las Vegas will soon hold the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix and be the site of the Downtown Neon City Festival. PFI will also provide security for Clark County polling sites on election day.

Even without these special events, violent incidents can take place at casinos.

Security Guard Intervenes in Stabbing

For instance, in August at Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa in Summerlin, Nev. a suspect was shot by a security guard after the assailant allegedly stabbed two employees.

Shayne Sussman, 25. was arrested on three attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon or tear gas charges, as well as four counts of battery with the use of a deadly weapon, and a single count of battery with the use of a deadly weapon, resulting in substantial bodily harm. The charges are pending in local court.

The unnamed security guard who shot the suspect prevented further violence at the casino.

It’s very rare but when it occurs it’s a perfect example of what a security force that is trained and armed should do in a casino,” Alvarez explained.

PFI also runs a dispatch center. that uses thermal imaging for surveillance.

“They are trained to look at that heat signature and zoom it in. Could be a cat, or dog or somebody,” Alvarez said. “If we can catch it before, or when it starts, and deploy teams and make the area safer, then we are already way ahead of the game.”

The firm additionally has specially trained dogs, kept by expert handlers, which can sniff out dangerous bombs/explosives or firearms.
